The right transport arrangement depends on your cargo and business priorities. A small shipment does not automatically mean groupage, and a larger one does not necessarily need an entire truck. Start with three questions: how much space is needed, how flexible are the dates, and how can the goods be handled?
What is the basic difference?
Groupage combines your shipment with other consignments in shared vehicle space. Full truckload (FTL) reserves the whole load capacity for a particular movement. Partial truckload (PTL) options also exist; the precise arrangement should be clarified in the quote.
Start with space, not just weight
Light, bulky goods can occupy more space than a heavy, compact shipment. External dimensions, height and stackability matter. Give the actual measurements after packing so the space planned is sufficient for the goods being collected.
Discuss timing and handling
Ask about the planned route, any transshipment and how delivery slots will be confirmed. If handling needs particular care, explain why and describe the packaging. Do not infer a guaranteed deadline from the label FTL or groupage alone: the specific commitment should be agreed in writing.
Compare quotes on the same basis
The lowest initial price does not explain the complete arrangement. Check the same parameters in each proposal, including conditions at both addresses.
- What dimensions and weight are included?
- Which dates and delivery windows are agreed?
- Is transshipment or special handling planned?
- How are waiting time, changes and additional services treated?
A practical way to decide
For a few standard pallets with a flexible delivery window, ask for an assessment of shared transport. For a bulky shipment or a specific need for dedicated transport, discuss a full truck. If your case falls between these options, ask for a comparison based on the actual requirements.
